false s x accusation/felon

A family member was falsly accused of molestation due to a little girl having a normal 'romantic crush' on our family member and then telling a story (that just became more ludicrist everyday). The mother went to the police the next day WITH NO PROOF, and 2 days later they arrest him. In FL no proof is needed for anything to arrest someone.
Even though there was no validation of what this child said, (childish romantic story), he was told to accept a plea of a nolo contendre to a lewd act because in addition to this story, unfortuntately unknown to us, his sons had downloaded a few child pictures on his computer. ( we approached them later and told them it was very wrong and against the law).

Our dilema, he received a withold of adjudication, and probation, (1) BUT how do we find a place to live? (2)do they do background checks when looking to rent? (3)And can this record ever be expunged? He is a registered s/offender/predator in FL now (and forever) and didn't even do anything.
We are lucky to have family/friends support, but other than that, no one cares about the truth.
